Even experienced makers encounter printing issues. Here are the ten most common problems and battle-tested solutions to get your prints back on track.
1. First Layer Not Sticking
The number one issue. Clean your bed with IPA, re-level, increase first layer temperature by 5C, and slow first layer speed to 20mm/s. A properly calibrated Z-offset is critical.
2. Stringing and Oozing
Enable retraction (4-6mm for Bowden, 0.5-2mm for direct drive), lower print temperature in 5C increments, and increase travel speed. Drying your filament often eliminates stringing entirely.
3. Layer Shifting
Check belt tension, verify motor driver current, ensure nothing is physically blocking the print head, and reduce print speed. Loose belts are the most common culprit.
4. Under-Extrusion
Could be a partial clog, worn nozzle, incorrect flow rate, or wet filament. Do a cold pull to clear clogs, calibrate e-steps, and check your filament diameter settings.
5. Warping
Use a heated bed, enclose your printer, add a brim or raft, and ensure your room is draft-free. ABS and nylon are particularly prone to warping.
Prevention is better than cure. Regular maintenance, dry filament storage, and proper calibration will prevent most issues before they start.
